About

Emerging artists are the treasure of society, creative minds, explorers who have the power to shape the future through their art. The European Festivals Fund for Emerging Artists - EFFEA was built exactly on this idea: to explore/discover these talents and to support emerging artists by offering them a platform to develop their career under festivals' wings; supporting them in their journey.

The activities include 50 residencies for emerging artists in the seat of 50 festivals: one leading festivals collaborating with at least two other festivals per project per year, based on an annual call to festivals. The Fund will foster and enable European visibility of emerging artists. It will address the needs of artists at different levels (research, capacity building, network, presentation platforms), the needs of festivals (programmers capacity building, alertness, internationalisation, collaboration), and audiences (access to diverse artists and arts works).

Two types of residencies

Festivals and their partners apply in a partnership and propose the artist that they will host within a period of 11 months. An emerging artist is defined in 2 types: EFFEA “Discovery” Artist in residence and EFFEA “Springboard” Artist in residence.

Emerging is not defined in terms of age. It is defined in terms of novelty for programmers and festival audiences, the potential of the artist to ‘break through’ internationally, and the artist’s potential to impact the artistic field in his/her discipline(s): a chance this artist did not have before.

Artists are not only individual artists but can be collectives, companies, ensembles, groups... of any age and nationality.

Category I - The EFFEA “Discovery” Artist in residence

EFFEA “Discovery” Artist in residence - Early career artists with exceptional talent and ready to break through internationally.

The leading festival, together with 2 partner festivals, will form a partnership with the purpose of creating bridges for the artist to develop through:

  • a residency and coaching at the leading festival, to develop an artistic idea, including eventual facilities for rehearsals.
  • meeting with at least 3 programmers (the leading festival and a minimum of 2 partner festivals) during their residency.
40 grants of 8.000€ will be attributed to this category.

Category II - The EFFEA “Springboard” Artist in residence

EFFEA “Springboard” Artist in residence - Mid-career artists, established in their own country, ready to develop their careers internationally.

EFFEA “Springboard” Artists in residence will:

  • have access to present their work at 3 festivals in Europe (the leading festival and two partners) with the purpose of building their career internationally.
10 grants of 15.000€ will be attributed to this category.
