Project summary

Sound artist and puppeteer Valtteri Alanen (Finland) and dancer Jim Manganello (Scotland) will undertake a two-week residency in Turku, Finland, to work on a new project (‘Tube Man’) that lovingly satirises contemporary masculinity. An experiment in how sound moves bodies and objects, and how objects and bodies make sound. Tube men are the very tall, wildly dancing, inflatable figures that you can see outside car dealerships. For Jim and Valtteri, not only are they interesting as objects - full of possibilities for strange sound and movement - but they are also a metaphor for contemporary masculinity: loud and flailing, big but comical, attention-grabbing but full of air.

Valtteri Alanen & Jim Manganello

Biography: Valtteri Alanen is a formally trained puppeteer and object-theatre maker, an autodidact sound-designer and an experimental musician from Finland. Since graduating with an MA in Directing for Devised and Object Theatre at DAMU, Prague, in 2023, he has focused on the intersections of sound technology, object-based performance, and experimentation with research-oriented performance making.

Jim Manganello is the director of Shotput, a dance-theatre company based in Glasgow, Scotland. Trained as an actor at the movement-based school Ecole Lassaad in Brussels, he’s worked across dance, film, opera, and theatre. He uses performance as a tool to investigate the ‘stickier’ subjects with humour - he likes to view things ‘slant’ through satire and an open heart.
