Project summary

Kanuti Gildi SAAL, the organiser of SAAL Biennaal (EST), together with POLIS (IT) and Sirenos (LV) is applying to create an exchange project in support of research and realisation of a participatory performance project “It’s Just an Orgy” by Estonian director and choreographer Siim Tõniste and working group. Behind the somewhat scandalous title and proposal stands a critical question towards the excess and overindulgence as an ever present symptom of human culture. The orgy is a symbol, a social practice and a devising method for a participatory show that builds a temporary community out of its participating audience members. In 2026 POLIS is having a Northern European focus; in collaboration with Sirenos we have introduced local artists to make the best choice for a stay in Italy.

Siim Tõniste

Biography: Siim Tõniste is an Estonian artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans dance, performance, choreography, and curatorial work. Active in the Estonian performing arts scene since 2009, he values collaboration and collective creation. Since 2024, he has been based between Germany and Estonia. His participatory performance supersocial (2020) explored how social environments shape opinions and earned the Residency Award at the Fast Forward – European Festival for Young Directors. In Are You Performing Yourself? (2022), a 12-hour piece, he examined self-representation and vulnerability through audience interaction. His projects often engage deeply with local communities and shared identities.
