Project summary

The Italian contemporary circus sector is growing rapidly, with new entities being able to programme and research on new dramaturgy and languages, together with new artists who choose actively to remain in the country and foster its artistic development. A common and developing language is the one of solo acts, through which some artists are finding more sustainable and intimate ways to research different meanings of the circus act. Laia's work in trying to merge and convey social and academic content through "performative conferences" deeply interests us to understand better whether solo acts are indeed becoming a new tool for artists to use when facing a new creation and content, considering also the more usual "choral" dimension of circus performances.

Laia Picas Rodoreda

Biography: During her studies - Philosophy, Politics and Economics - she discovered her passion for live arts and circus. From the beginning, she is motivated to place contemporary circus at the center of the academy as a means of cultural vindication by producing the dissertation, "Un exemple de filosofia intercultural. Interpretació de la dansa aèria des de la "no-acció" (wuwei) i l'"espontaneïtat" (ziran)." In June of the same year he participated with this research, led by Raquel Bouso, as a lecturer at the "Jornada d'estudi estètic intercultural: de la imatge al gest" at Pompeu Fabra University. After practicing artistic gymnastics, she began a new phase where she trained professionally in contemporary circus at the Rogelio Rivel and Flic Circus Schools. She participated in Flic's "Artistic Year" program for the creation of the elaborate "The Lamp Woman" under the artistic eye of Flavio D'Andrea and Alessandro Maida. She presented this project in work-in-progress form at Brocante Festival, Muja Buskers Festival, Pervia Circus Festival, Dinamico Festival, Euforia Circus Festival. At the same time, her passion for art and culture led her to start a Master's degree in Cultural Management at the UOC. She was part of the show "Monumental" directed by Jocelyn Cottencin at the Mercat de les Flors i la Dansa in the Salmon Festival in Barcelona. She is currently a performer in the circus opera Circo inCanto directed by Roberto Magro and composed by Simon Thièrre.
