Project summary

The Italian contemporary circus sector is growing rapidly, with new entities being able to programme and research on new dramaturgy and languages, together with new artists who choose actively to remain in the country and foster its artistic development. A common and developing language is the one of solo acts, through which some artists are finding more sustainable and intimate ways to research different meanings of the circus act. Laia's work in trying to merge and convey social and academic content through "performative conferences" deeply interests us to understand better whether solo acts are indeed becoming a new tool for artists to use when facing a new creation and content, considering also the more usual "choral" dimension of circus performances.

Laia Picas Rodoreda

Biography: Laia Picas Rodoreda is a young contemporary circus artist with a varied and international background.
Holding a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economy she is striving to bring circus and the performative actions inside the academia, using it as a tool to discuss relevant, academic topics and contents; she discussed her thesis “Un exemple de filosofia intercultural. Interpretació de la dansa aèria des de la “no-acció” (wuwei) i l’“espontaneïtat” (ziran)” posing contemporary circus as a tool for intercultural claims.

Formed professionally at circus schools Rogelio Rivel and Flic Scuola di Circo (Catalunya and Italy), she received positive feedbacks on her way of performing which she defines “performative conferences”, a place and a time on stage during which academic and non-academic contents are vehiculated to the public through performative means.
