Project summary

The artistic residency will put in place Ensemble Med musicians (Daniela Tomaz: historical flutes, adufe, artistic direction; Mariana Fabião: singing; Sérgio Calisto: viola d’amore a chiavi and moraharpa) together with José Alberto Gomes (real time electronics / composition) and D. Amélia Fonseca (“adufe” & singing), who is one of the mythic “Adufeiras de Monsanto”, holding a unique interpretation of playing the Portuguese traditional framedrum “ADUFE”, from which the leading festival ENCONTROS MED draws its inspiration and which is also the symbol of the Municipality of Idanha-a-Nova. They will explore repertoire of the Songbook of Monsanto village, and premiering new works by José Alberto Gomes, inspired by this living tradition.

Biography: Ensemble Med [med: mediterrânean/medieval] is a music performing-research lab aiming at exploring the limits between Early Music and World Music i.e. the written source versus the oral tradition, searching their own living and actual interpretation, in a multicultural and transversal mindset. The Ensemble started in 2012 in Utrecht, the Netherlands and since then has performed as well in International Day of Portuguese Language in Tbilisi (Georgia), Early Music Fest. “Sons Antigos a Sul”, Jornadas Medievais de Sesimbra, Med Classic Festival, Percursos da Música Festival, International Guitar Festival of Lagoa, Black Madonna Days (Vila do Bispo), Feira Dieta Mediterrânica Tavira, Casa da Música Porto , Fusos Festival in Alte and Museu do Oriente in Lisboa, live for the National Portuguese Radio (Antena2), May 2021. They are the artistic resident ensemble for ENCONTROS MED, since its pre-foundation year in 2018. In 2020, they performed with Galician Gaita master Carlos Nuñez, where they explored the universe of Cantigas de Santa Maria, Alphonso X, Cathedral of Tui, Galicia, / International Keyboard Festival [IKFEM]. For 2022, there prepared an international tour with the programme “ Intercultural Dialogue in the Medieval Mediterranean”, presented in Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris, and Synagogue of Bet Israel, Izmir, Turkey, co-funded by the Portuguese Directorate General for the Arts.
