Project summary

This hybrid residency will bring together a collective of artists to investigate storytelling (through Dance & Theatre) that is inclusive of a historical perspective when talking about people seeking safety. It will assess how imperialism, colonialism & racism shape the way we tell stories of Displacement & Borders. The development of the piece will be informed by an intertextual approach together with gathering perspectives from local & refugee communities in Israel & Italy. The residency aims to enable a) the development of a performance & work-in-progress presentation in Malta, & b) a dialogue between the artists & festival partners about the needs, considerations, & touring management of cross-disciplinary productions, with an eye towards future touring of the performance.

Artist

Dance Beyond Borders (Julienne Schembri & Deborah Falzon)

Biography: Dance Beyond Borders (DBB) brings together contemporary dancer Julienne Schembri & flamenco dancer Deborah Falzon in their shared inquiry into the power of movement for social change. They unite in their belief that arts & culture can help us see forced migration & displacement differently: by creating connections across differences & representing the voices & experiences of refugees in performance.

Some of their recent creations include a dance piece focusing on an investigation of a woman’s journey of forced migration (‘HER’), and an interdisciplinary performance responding to migration haikus and embodying the outcry of injustices experienced by those searching for a better life (‘Żal’).
