Project summary

The artistic residency “Pilgrimage Routes: A Journey to Rome, Montserrat, and Compostela” will premiere at the 13th edition of the Early Music Festival of the Pyrenees, in Seminari de la Seu d’Urgell and Església de Sant Joan de Berga (ES) - cultural heritage churches of 2 rural villages in a decentralised and transnational region of the Catalan Pyrenees (ES/FR/AD). It will be led by the emergent Portuguese ensemble Na Rota do Peregrino, a crossborder medieval music lab between 7 Portuguese and Spanish musicians, with Mauricio Molina (artistic direction, historical percussion) and Daniela Tomaz (direction, flutes, bells). Na Rota do Peregrino will explore repertories associated with the principal medieval pilgrimage shrines and routes of Rome, Santiago of Compostela, and Montserrat.

Na Rota do Peregrino

Biography: Na Rota do Peregrino is a pioneering artistic project in Portugal which seeks to boost the national artistic ecosystem in partnership with international musicians, through the musical reconstruction of the medieval Iberian repertoire (in Latin and Galician-Portuguese). It has as a double objective: on one hand, the dynamization of the intangible heritage constituted by the musical sources and on the other hand to promote the Romanesque heritage.

Since its formation, the Ensemble works annually in an artistic creation residency in partnership with the Municipality of Ponte de Lima, Teatro Diogo Bernardes.

It was founded in 2017, under general direction of Daniela Tomaz (Ensemble Med), artistic direction of Maurício Molina (City University of New York) and promoted by O Corvo e a Raposa.
