        Project summary
In Bach’s dialogue cantata ‘Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen’ (1726) we meet a lost soul searching for salvation. Where can she find comfort and help? Fascinated, choreographer Femke Gyselinck wondered: What music could she add? From what period, even contemporary perhaps? And what dance language would convey the theme most effectively? In ‘Torment of Hearts’, 3 dancers, 2 singers and an ensemble of 7 musicians give shape to various manifestations of loneliness. We hear Krieger, Mahler and newly written music by Hendrik Lasure, crafted specifically for a choreography that is contemporary and collaborative, lyrical and graceful, at times bombastic, yearning and subdued. The music is performed by B’Rock Orchestra led by Cecilia Bernardini, featuring Deborah Cachet and Jonathon Adams.

                    Biography:
Femke Gyselinck (1983, Belgium) is a dancer and choreographer. After completing her studies at P.A.R.T.S in 2006, she worked as a freelance dancer with Eleanor Bauer, Andros Zins-Browne and Esther Venrooy, among others. She worked 9 years as the artistic assistant of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker/Rosas and is part of the faculty of P.A.R.T.S. In her own work, Femke searches for a dance language that is closely intertwined with music and that combines bold performativity with a fine form of expressivity. Femke enjoys answering collaborative questions from theatre makers, dance organisations and musicians. She is one of the four artistic directors of dance organisation GRIP, along with choreographers Jan Martens, Cherish Menzo and Steven Michel.
